Yup, the following couple of months are marking the end of 2017/2018 seasons across a variety of Esports franchises. The biggest Esports event, Dota 2 TI9, finished a couple of days ago, marking the end of a marvelous season of the most popular MOBA game on the planet. LoL’s Worlds is basically around the corner in what is yet another display of Esports brilliance. No dispute that League of Legends is still one of the top Esports games, even 10 years into its existence!

What I’m basically trying to explain here is that, after 2 or 3 final top-tier tournaments are done and dealt with, a new Esports seasonal cycle is set to start. And what better way to start off than with a comprehensive list of the top Esports games in 2019. But, instead of going straight to the list, first we’ll take a closer look at the current situation in the Esports.

Esports Keeps Climbing up the Food Chain

It doesn’t take a genius to realize what a rapidly growing market Esports is. During the last 2 decades, it went from being a garage hobby of countless “nerds“ to a worldwide phenomenon going head to head with well-established sports.

The fanbase is a big part of this process. It’s safe to say Esports has one of the healthiest and quickest growing fanbases in the world. Millennials are a force to be reckoned with and are driving this industry unlike any other. Viewership of Esports events is continuing its rapid growth, reaching the point of overthrowing conventional sports. Just take a look at the table down below and you will understand what I am talking about here:

Esports Viewership growth

46 million people tuned in to watch the IEM Katowice in 2017. 46 million viewers – let that sink in for a second before we continue onward. 46 million – that’s the entire population of Spain for crying out loud.

But that number becomes even crazier when compared to the TV viewership of Superbowl 2018 which sits at slightly over 100 million. Yes, Superbowl still had more than double the number of viewers… but Superbowl is considered the biggest sporting event in the USA. And we all know what a history NFL has in the States… But still, video games managed to get to half of its viewership in as little as 20 years. Just think about what sort of numbers will Esports tournaments have a decade from now…

Top Esports Games 2019

5. Rainbow Six

Rainbow Six Siege is now experiencing an impressive player-base growth and has every right to be list as one of the top Esports games in 2019. Last year’s statistics show that they’ve accumulated amazing 20 million registered players which is, by all means, a very praiseworthy feat. Considering the fact that biggest names in the industry (such as Overwatch and Destiny) have around 30 million registered players shows what a wonderful job Rainbow Six Siege development team has done.

But it wasn’t always the case. Rainbow Six Siege had massive problems at launch. Server issues were crippling the game and ruining the experience for many players. However, after fixing everything on the server side of the deal, the popularity of their game simply exploded. Nowadays, it’s regarded as one of the hottest FPS prospects out there, going head to head with Battlefield and CoD annual installments as well as its biggest Esports competitor – CS:GO.

However, as far as competitive Esports games 2019 are concerned, Rainbow Six has grown quite a bit. They’re not there yet, but overall the progress is evident. Might be soon that we see some truly massive Esports tournaments!

In the meantime, the dev team could focus a bit more on actually making Rainbow Six Siege one of the most worthwhile games out there. As it stands right now – it isn’t quite there yet.

Biggest Rainbow Six Tournament in 2019 – Rainbow Six Invitational 2019 – $1,000,000+ Prize Pool

Best Rainbow Six Teams in 2019 – Ninjas in Pyjamas, Team Liquid, Team Secret, Cloud9, ENCE Esports…

4. League of Legends

I believe many will agree with me when I say that League of Legends is the key factor that pushed Esports into the mainstream scene. What Fortnite is today, League of Legends was roughly 6-7 years ago. But it’s important to note that back when LoL became popular, competitive Esports scene hasn’t even existed on a truly professional level. It is with their World Championship tournaments that fans got the first taste of what professional Esports scene could look like in years to come.

And it was exactly what happened – League of Legends, with its massive popularity, managed to single-handedly push the entire industry to the plateau it stands on even to this day. That’s why League of Legends still deserves its place as one of the best Esports games in 2019 – even though Its popularity has started sinking. Riot Games are still keeping the game as fresh as possible with frequent updates and meta changes. However, more and more players are leaving the game due to a highly toxic community and new games with big potential.

As one of the top Esports games 2019, League of Legends did actually bounce back from its downward spiral and it seems everything is under control. But it’s tough staying at the top when you’ve got such powerful and huge competitors (in this case Dota 2) stealing the show. Still, League of Legends is one of the best competitive Esports games 2019 and that comes as absolutely NO surprise!

Biggest LoL Tournament in 2019 – LoL World Championship 2019 – Prize Pool unknown at this time (off the record, it will be $3,000,000+)

Best LoL Teams in 2019 – G2 Esports, FunPlus Phoenix, Team Liquid, SK Telecom T1, Fnatic, Royal Never Give Up…

3. Overwatch

Overwatch was Blizzard’s response to growing popularity of MOBA and FPS games in the Esports scene. Their response was a game that combined the 2 genres in an action-packed environment unlike any other. FPS perspective in small, highly-detailed maps (with different types of objectives) with a wide variety of heroes to choose from. Each of them has different skills and abilities, effectively portraying the MOBA aspect of the game.

Overwatch was (and still is) a huge hit and a really valuable asset of Blizzard Entertainment. Its Esports presence is showing a rapid growth too, especially after the forming of the Overwatch League. It introduced franchising (similar to NBA’s team system) and has had an immensely popular Inaugural Season. Overwatch League Season 2 changed everything and the number of viewers for each of the competitive days (in OWL) hovers around 100k. Pretty strong viewership for a ‘declining’ game (as some have called it).

2. CS:GO

Ever since its release, CS:GO was at the very top of the Esports industry. As such, there’s no way it could’ve been left out of our top Esports games in 2019 list. Valve’s FPS masterpiece is still going strong with an impressive number of tournaments scattered all around the world. The game is based on individual skill but team play and in-game economy monitoring are of equal importance.

Streaming is a big part of the CS:GO experience too. There’s a ton of players who play Esports for money on various services such as YouTube Gaming and Twitch.tv. As for the professional level, CS:GO tournaments are still able to attract a ton of highly skilled players.

CSGO is arguably one of the most competitive games 2019. It has come a long way since its inception and each competitive year is different in CSGO. But, if you were to tune in to any major or premier tournament in CSGO, you’d feel right at home. Seems like Valve does know what they’re doing.

Biggest CS:GO Tournament in 2019 – IEM XIII Katowice/StarLadder Berlin Major 2019 – $1,000,000 Prize Pool

Best CS:GO Teams in 2019 – Team Liquid, Vitality, Astralis, ENCE, NRG, Na’Vi…

1. Dota 2

And finally, we have reached the best Esports game at the moment… and surely one of the top Esports games 2019 too. Dota 2 has been at the top of the food chain for quite a while now. It’s all thanks to its massive popularity all around the world. Plus, the ever-increasing prize pools are pushing the envelope even further.

Let me just remind you that The International 2019, which has finished just a couple of days ago, brought in over $34 million USD for the prize pool. The winner, OG, brought home slightly over $15 million which is one of the biggest single pots in the history of Esports… with the runners-up being Team Liquid.

Dota 2 is most definitely the Esports game that features the largest Esports tournament to date. The International is the pinnacle of gaming, and Dota 2 shows it! For sure one of, if not, the most popular Esports games 2019! Evidence of this can be found in viewership numbers for the Grand Finals – just a hair short of 2 million unique viewers. That’s more than ever before!

Biggest Dota 2 Tournament in 2019 – The International 2019 – $34,326,520 Prize Pool

Best Dota 2 Teams in 2019 – OG, Team Liquid, Team Secret, PSG.LGD, Vici Gaming, Evil Geniuses…

Honorary Mentions

Of course, some Esports games 2019 aren’t as large as these five, but they still leave a mark. They are followed by many, many fans and overall, these are good games. Shame that they don’t have a larger following with larger prize pools and larger tournaments but eh, the future is looking good!

Rocket League

Rocket League is an incredibly unique and fun game. If it weren’t for these 5, it would definitely be one of the top Esports games in 2019. Still, Rocket League manages to capture the hearts of its viewers in a simple manner; watch a quick game of vehicular soccer and every move looks seamless, professional, smooth.

In a couple of months or years with proper dev support and an increase in tournament numbers and prize pools, we might see Rocket League emerge as one of the top dogs.

Biggest Rocket League tournament in 2019: RLCS Season 7 Finals – $529,500 Prize Pool

Best Rocket League Teams in 2019 – NRG Esports, Frontline, Renault Vitality, Dignitas, Cloud9, G2 Esports…

We can’t have a top Esports games list without at least mentioning Fortnite. This Esports game is a weird one; it’s very young yet extremely ambitious. Technically, the Fortnite Esports scene isn’t quite fleshed out as with other games, but this hasn’t stopped Epic Games from creating a rock-solid foundation.

If they continue like this, we’ll definitely be counting Fortnite as one of the best Esports games! Minecraft might have outranked Fortnite in number of active players, but Minecraft doesn’t have an Esports future (even though I personally prefer it to Fortnite).

Biggest Fortnite Tournament in 2019: Fortnite World Cup 2019 – $30,000,000 Prize Pool

Best Fortnite Players in 2019 – Tfue, Ninja, LiquidPoach, NotVivid, FaZe Cloak, Ghost Saf…

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been the subject of controversy over and over again. But no one can dispute the game’s success as well as growth in the Esports scene. The first large-scale battle royale game to come out in recent history, PUBG has cemented its position as a worthwhile game, even (and especially) to pro gamers looking to make a name for themselves.

It still hasn’t quite peaked in terms of viewership and ‘respect’ in the Esports world, but PUBG is nonetheless a game worth being on the top Esports games 2019 list.

Biggest PUBG Tournament in 2019: PUBG Global Championship 2019 – $2,000,000 Prize Pool

Best PUBG Players in 2019: Dynamo, SuperNayr, Ibiza, Waduhek, Savior, Kaymind…
