Horror games aren’t for everyone. They can contain jump scares (that no one truly likes), creepy settings, insane stories, etc. But people don’t play them for the wow factor; they play them to get scared. Or laugh because it isn’t scary. Depends. Contrary to those, the beauty of Control lies in its origin.
Control is a game that was heavily influenced by the Copypasta community. We can clearly see evidence of this throughout the game. But just what kind of game is this and what’s the big deal? Games are influenced often by various things. Well, here’s the full explanation:
What is Control?
- Genre – Control is an action-adventure video game. It is a third-person shooter. The game is story-based.
- Developer and Publisher – It was developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games.
- Release Dates and Platforms – Control was released on 27 August 2019 for Microsoft Windows (via the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Where is Control Set?
Control’s story revolves around an undercover officer working for the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). FBC is in charge of examining the “paranormal” wonders which resist standard reality. This is shown through Altered World Events (AWEs); interruptions upon said reality, molded by the human collective unconscious. These AWEs influence prototype objects and give them special properties; alluded to as Altered Items by the Bureau. They are contained inside FBCs central station at the Oldest House – a colossal Brutalist high rise in New York City.
Wonderments produce Objects of Power which are one of a kind. They award certain people paranormal capacities. Objects of Power are associated with the Astral Plane, another measurement lodged by the Board. The Astral Plane is an extradimensional element which imparts through an enormous, transformed dark pyramid. The Board appoints the Bureau’s initiative through a custom associated with the Service Weapon, an Object of Power; whoever the Board uses the Service Weapon on is considered to be on course of becoming the FBC director.
The Oldest House itself is alluded to as a Place of Power by the FBC. On the inside, it is an unbounded, continually moving space associated with different substitute measurements through rooms known as Thresholds.
What is the SCP Foundation?
The SCP Foundation is a fictional organization documented by the web-based collaborative-fiction project of the same name. Within the website’s fictional setting, the SCP Foundation is responsible for locating and containing individuals, entities, locations, and objects that violate natural law (referred to as SCPs).
Its website is community-based and includes elements of many genres such as horror, science fiction, and urban fantasy.
How has the SCP Foundation inspired this game?
Contributors that spent hours writing tales of paranormal activities and trying to depict the situations to the general audience are now getting a visual form as a video game designed exactly to match the tales and create a perception in the player’s mind. The game, Control, is based upon 2 collaborative projects on the SCP’s website: SCP-173 and SCP 683.
SCP-173 is based on a humanoid statue composed of rebar, concrete and Krylon spray paint. It is stationary when directly observed, but it attacks people and snaps their neck when the line of sight with it is broken. It is extremely fast, to the point where it can move multiple meters while the observer is blinking.
SCP-683 is based on a Refrigerator and a 5-7-year-old boy. The refrigerator is believed to work without having to plug in the cord.
Control builds on the stories from the SCP and lets you see how an organization might try to deal with and contain these otherworldly entities. But it doesn’t try and impose any real order or structure to proceedings.
The developers opposed the compulsion to give a fundamental feeling of explanation or discernment to procedures. Or to fabricate a world that can clarify the abnormal goings. The game might not have been composed by many mysterious countenances on the web. However, it catches the confused, arbitrary pitch of the SCP Foundation. How and why things these things are going on is never clarified, however, that doesn’t generally make a difference.
The game’s main voice cast was announced at New York Comic-Con in 2018, consisting of various stars from Remedy’s previous games. Courtney Hope, who played the character Beth Wilder in Quantum Break, stars as Jesse Faden.
Matthew Porretta, famous for his role as the titular character of Alan Wake, is also featured in both voice roles and live-action videos as the character of Dr. Casper Darling. While James McCaffrey, known for his roles as the title character of Max Payne and Thomas Zane in Alan Wake, plays the role of Zachariah Trench.
In May 2017, Remedy reported that they had banded together with 505 Games to distribute the game, at that point codenamed “P7”. 505 promoted and distributed support and gave a reserve of €7.75 million to help the game’s development. Remedy held the licensed innovation rights to Control. The game was authoritatively uncovered at Sony Interactive Entertainment’s E3 2018 question and answer session.
It was Remedy’s first game on a Sony stage since 2003’s Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. The Microsoft Windows variant was sold only on the Epic Games Store stage; under the provisions of this selectiveness, stage administrator Epic Games paid Digital Bros, 505 Games’ parent organization, €9.49 million (US$10.5 million).
What’s next for Control?
Remedy has confirmed designs for two extra content extensions to Control, titled “The Foundation” and “Stunningness”. Both are narratively set after the primary game with Jesse taking on her job as the FBC Director.
After a long discussion on the game, and the inspiration of its development I would like to finish off with what Pierce, the community manager of SCP had to say:
“I think in fairness, they had the inspiration [from us], but they took it in their direction. They did something with it that we could not do in a thousand years.”
