It’s the start of March, almost a year has passed since Dota 2 lost it’s long held top spot as the most played game on Valve’s platform Steam. Last night the statistics were out and Dota 2 passed 1.000.000 concurrent players for the first time since February 2017. and overtook Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds as the game with most active players. Dota 2 player numbers are increasing ever so slightly.
Nobody can say for sure what this means for Dota 2 as it’s been quite some time since it was the most contested game on Steam but Valve’s giant looks to be making a steady comeback. Frequent gameplay updates coupled with the fact Dota 2 is releasing more and more new heroes and gameplay mechanics looks to be one of the core elements behind this comeback to the top.
Dota 2 has one of, if not the richest pro scene with multi million investments made by Valve yearly to keep the game healthy and fresh alongside rivals like League of Legends and Overwatch. It seems as though this year, the competition is fierce and it comes as no surprise that the Dota 2 player numbers are so high right now.
With The International 9 just around the corner and the pro scene looking more stacked than ever accross all regions, Dota 2 looks to be on a healthy growing spiral the last couple of months and by all inclinations Valve will look to keep up this steady rate of progress and offer us an unforgettable second part of the year when the biggest events of the season look to take place.
