Following the release of Fortnite Chapter 2 this week, we’ve heard news about Epic Games’ openness to cryptocurrencies and blockchain. Does this mean that Fortnite cryptocurrency support might arise in the near future? If not, what’s it all about? Well, Epic Games has always had grand plans for Fortnite and they’ve shown their dedication over the time it’s been out. And knowing this, introducing Fortnite cryptocurrency support isn’t too far fetched. Although, this isn’t priority right now.

The new season of Fortnite has introduced many changes to the game. Plenty of veteran players don’t recognize half the game but overall mood is good. I have doubts that too many Fortnite players will know how to use cryptocurrency though. Nevertheless, it’s important to say that this isn’t the first time Epic Games and Fortnite crossed path with blockchain technology.

Will Fortnite Cryptocurrency Support Happen in the Future?

Fortnite began to expand rapidly once released. Epic Games gave it their all to revitalize the battle royale genre. It isn’t surprising seeing this game company make risky, bold moves. So offering Fortnite cryptocurrency support is fairly mild for Epic Games’ standards.

Recently, Fortnite Chapter 2 was published after the game was unplayable for a couple of days. Players could only join and watch a black hole consume the old world. However, a couple of days ago, Epic Games enabled Fortnite play. And boy – was it a shocker. So many things have been implemented but that’s a story for another time. In any case, Epic Games has shown just how much they’re willing to achieve in the gaming market.

So how could Epic Games achieve Fortnite cryptocurrency support? Well, if we take into account their yearly revenue for 2018 (from in-game items and perks purchased) which is around $2.5 billion – it’s clear that Epic can make this dream a reality. At the moment, using cryptocurrency in Fortnite is impossible but who’s to say it won’t happen? As I said before, Fortnite and crypto have crossed paths in the past.

Using Cryptocurrency to Bet on Fortnite

Whenever a sport becomes larger than life (ie soccer), betting opens up for that sport. When Esports was just beginning in the form of random, small tournaments, betting on it was nigh impossible. And now? Now we’ve got hundreds, if not thousands of Esports bookies that support Esports betting. And in the case of Fortnite here, it’s common seeing websites offer good Fortnite odds.

Some sites offer cryptocurrency betting on Esports

I think we can all agree that Epic Games is absolutely insane – but in a good way. They’ve provided so much prize money in the existing Fortnite tournaments that it causes you to think of becoming a pro. Just kidding; we enjoy our lives just watching the pros battle it out. The Fortnite World Cup in July had a $33 million prize pool. What’s especially shocking is this fact: Up until this point, Epic Games has provided more than $84 million in prize money!

Now, if you don’t feel comfortable using physical cash for Esports betting – check out cryptocurrencies. Many people have turned to this method of betting because it’s easy, everything is ready on the go, and generally doesn’t require too much work in a bank or something like that. A few clicks and you’re done! Bet placed!

So Fortnite cryptocurrency betting is quite real. There are a couple of great websites that offer Esports betting in the form of cryptocurrencies and one of those is Unikrn. We already have a review so make yourself comfortable and check it out after this article! You can also play games with Unikrn and win cash prizes. Unikrn utilizes a unique cryptocurrency token called ‘Unikoin Gold’.

With this cryptocurrency, you can bet on Fortnite matches, play games as said earlier, and enter giveaways. It’s also really secure considering it uses blockchain tech.

Can you Buy V-Bucks with Crypto?

V-Bucks are Fortnite’s premium currency. It is purchased with real money. However, there is a method of getting V-Bucks using cryptocurrencies, albeit not officially. Fortnite doesn’t directly support cryptocurrencies but you can get V-Bucks through a third-party website – Bitrefill. Once you purchase V-Bucks using crypto on Bitrefill, you’ll receive a gift code that can be entered in the game. Once done, you’ll receive your V-Bucks.

This is a simple workaround but still not good enough for Epic Games’ standards. Imagine being able to do all of this in-game. I’d reckon we’d see a lot more skins show up during matches! There’s one interesting tidbit surrounding Epic Games and cryptocurrencies and it’s this: At the beginning of this year, you could have purchased official Fortnite merch – using XMR (Monero). Although, Epic Games didn’t actually support Monero. It was a small mistake that was quickly fixed, but it still showed how much potential cryptocurrencies have for Fortnite.

Epic Games Loves Blockchain Tech

You’d think that Epic Games’ wouldn’t be interested in blockchain and cryptocurrencies considering them giving up on Monero support. But this isn’t the case! In fact, Tim Sweeney from the Epic Games development team has said that they’re into blockchain tech but just aren’t capable of incorporating this system at this time.

The man seems to support blockchain and crypto!

He has said “Many of us at Epic are big fans of the decentralized computing tech underlying cryptocurrency, however a lot more work is needed on volatility and fraud-proofing before bringing it to such a broad audience that includes younger gamers. Epic doesn’t have any cryptocurrency partners and aren’t in any crypto partnership discussions with anyone. We do read lots of papers and talk to smart people to learn more in anticipation of an eventual intercept.”

This was in the past though, and since then, Epic has revitalized their interest. A couple of months ago in May, they signed a partnership with ‘The Abyss‘; a gaming platform based on blockchain. The Abyss is special in its own way though – it supports Epic’s Unreal Developers Network and lets game developers use it. Studios that decide to use The Abyss and put their games on there can choose to take Abyss Tokens for both in-game purchases and the game themselves.

The Future of Fortnite Cryptocurrency Support

I wouldn’t worry about Fortnite cryptocurrency support. If we’re going by Sweeney’s comments, Epic Games will sooner, rather than later, open up this possibility. The blockchain and crypto industry is also interested in Fortnite and Esports. After all, the entire video game industry revenue for 2019 is at around $150 billion! Those are huge numbers.

Maybe we see advancements of this type in the near future. Maybe in a couple of months. And maybe years. But one thing’s for sure – Epic Games really is interested in making Fortnite cryptocurrency support a reality.
