The 2019 LoL World Championship has started in Berlin, Germany with the play-ins stage. G2 is the 1st seed of Europe and they’re already in the group phase. There has been a lot of talks up to this moment where a lot of people are wondering whether G2 Esports can lift the cup this year. It would give their incredible feats at both Spring and Summer Splits in LEC and at Mid Season Invitational a new dimension. But can G2 Win Worlds 2019?
While the answer to this question cannot be answered categorically as there is still a long way for each team to go in Worlds, the hype around European teams, particularly G2 this year, seems quite different. G2 Esports fans think that a Worlds victory is in the cards.
What’s Expected of G2 Esports and Can they Win Worlds 2019?
With Riot having announced the world cup draw on September 23rd, G2 find themselves in Group A just waiting for the play in rounds to confirm their 4th opponent in that group, The 2 opponents already confirmed in Group A apart from G2 are LCK’s griffin and North America’s Cloud 9. When compared side by side with these two 2 teams it is expected of G2 to still make it past the group stages and into the quarter-finals given that they are LEC Champions but Griffin and Cloud 9 will certainly not be walk over opponents.
Team Griffin placed 1st in both Spring and Summer splits but lost Summer Playoffs to SK Telecom. They will be looking to prove the superiority of the LCK in the group and shut down G2’s hype. However, Cloud 9 are a team known for making the most out of tough situations. Also, they’ve made history by defeating Afreeca Freecs.
This made it so the first time since Season One World Championship that a North American team had made semifinals. Only to be kicked out of that semi-finals by LEC’s Fnatic! Cloud 9 will definitely be looking to have their revenge on Fnatic’s European counterpart.
The Strength of the G2’s team is one which lots of fans and players alike have talked about this season. Their aggressive gameplay and mechanics sets them apart from a lot of other teams. Their ability to take risks also comes in handy for them. From top lane Wunder, to jungler Jankos, to their valuable mid laner, Cap to Perkz, who plays the ADC role. Finally, Mikyx and Promisq supporting at bottom lane! This team with their coach GrabbZ will have to live up to the hype surrounding them for Worlds.
Also, for the World Cup draw, the group of death as tagged by many is Ggroup C. It comprises of Fnatic, then 3 time World champions – SK Telecom, and China’s RNGU. It will be very interesting to watch especially the battle between Season One Champions – Fnatic and SK Telecom!

And with a 4th addition to be determined from the play in rounds, whichever two teams make it to the quarter-finals from group C will certainly deserve a big pat on the back.
The first day of play-ins saw LEC’s third seed, Splyce pick up a routine 2-0 win in their group. NA’s Clutch Gaming lost their 1st match but Huni and CG bounced back to avoid a possible end to their journey. The second day of play-ins has Korea’s Damwon Gaming go 2-0 in their group beating both Flamengo and Royal Youth which places them in a favorable position to head into groups.
