Swearing in Esports

OH MY GOD. PEOPLE WHO SWEAR CAN LITERALLY CAUSE A MASS EXTINCTION EVENT AND WE’LL ALL BE DEAD IN A JIFFY. SWEARING BREAKS FAMILIES APART, EVEN A SIMPLE FUCK YOU CAN HAVE LONG-LASTING CONSEQUENCES ON ONE’S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. PARENTS, GAMERS, TEENS, KIDS, NOOBS – PLEASE COVER YOUR EARS FOR THE POWER OF SWEARING IN ESPORTS IS TOO MUCH TO HANDLE.

No, but seriously, being an asshole is never an okay deal. Swearing on behalf of someone’s mother or their families is never an okay deal. Really pushing it with the swearing and insults is never an okay deal. But letting out a unique and intriguing swear sequence or just a simple F-Bomb is okay in my book. After all, how else are you going to let off steam in high-tension, high-stress situations? You don’t really mean it when you react upon getting killed by the enemy. “Ah for fucks sake what the fuck was that”, “Someone get that fucker he just did me a solid”, “FUCKFUCKFUCKINGFUCKFUCKFUCK” don’t sound mean or rude; they sound childish and steam-venty.

Besides, science has proven that swearing can help alleviate pain, deal with stress, and overall make you happier. Which is kind of obvious, no? People usually swear to let out steam. Think of it this way: If you hit your pinky on the table and let out an audible “fuckin’ fucker I’ll have you for sawdust” – do you really mean it? Is the TABLE REALLY AT FAULT HERE? No, it’s you being a clumsy person. So it all comes down to venting. Fnatic probably knows this well after Worlds 2018, secretly wishing IG’s computers would blow up. Jokes on them the only thing that blew up was a hand warmer and that was a weird scene.

The swearing master; unfortunately not in Esports

Now that we have that out of the way, which are Esports’ biggest and baddest R-rated swearing moments that no one should ever hear or speak of to prevent potential emotional distress? (this is a joke; who gets upset over simple swearing lmao)

The Best NSFW Moments in Esports

5. Redeye’s Olympics Rant

Redeye was always in the public’s ‘eye’ (fucking hell just end me) and he comes off as controversial at times. But you can’t bother the man for being honest and open about his feelings and opinions. In the world of roboticized PR responses that contain fluff so you don’t feel insulted or whatnot – Redeye is a genuine person. He lets most of it out to the world. Honesty is honestly (end me the second time) pretty scarce today; it’s much easier just lying or downplaying your emotions to avoid the fallout but Redeye doesn’t care. He has integrity, and that’s what truly matters.

So it’s no wonder that his reaction to the whole Olympics-Esports situation was so explosive. The host of the Podcast, Sujoy Roy, looked kind of reserved and baffled at Redeye’s reaction. He simply let Redeye explain everything he thinks and personally, that was a good choice.

If you watch the video closely, he doesn’t discredit the achievements of athletes and sportspeople that participate in the Olympics. Quite the opposite really; he acknowledges that they’re amazing people with amazing skills and that the Olympics are the ultimate goal for many of them. But the point of the discussion he’s having is to show that Esports doesn’t need the Olympics to thrive further.

Near the end of his rant, he lets out an interesting (but pretty accurate) sentence – “It feels pompous AS FUCK to me”. Which, if you listened closely to his argument, is a fully justified way of feeling about what’s happening. As if Esports needs any more investigating to see if it’s “worth” being at the Olympics. Fuck, we reached this point of popularity and success without it, who needs em.

We’ll have our own Olympics with BLACKJACK AND HOOKERS!

4. Sync Esports at DreamHack Heroes of Newerth

Sometimes, people swear in the heat of the moment. It’s a simple way of showing emotion. So yelling FUCK YOUUUU during a winning push can truly motivate a team. Hmm.. I wonder.. If life coaches told people to swear more, would they be considered inadequate to work?

Back to topic! In this high-quality clip we see the team of Sync Esports drop a few swear words throughout the final push. But Insania is the one who does it first and there’s something so hilarious in the way he says it:

Dude just rips it from the top of his lungs and goes back to normal as if nothing happens. Throughout the clip, multiple members are heard dropping swear words (that Pepsi probably helped) which just goes to show that swearing is an integral part of Esports. Technically, you’re not allowed to do it, but who gives a shit? If it’s a live broadcast and someone swears on camera – it’s pretty funny and not insulting or hurtful to the ears of young viewers. But it is seen as unprofessional and raspy. We should cherish all of these moments because that’s what makes them special; such clips prove that players, casters, interviewers and all others involved in Esports are human and sometimes, they can’t help themselves.

Speaking of breaking the NO SWEAR rule on stream, boy do I have a good one for you!

3. THAT’S FUCKIN BEAUTIFUL

During the H2K and Giants League of Legends game, a huge teamfight happened at H2K’s base and it was as chaotic as can be. Giants were looking to end the game and the teamfight originally went their way. However, they were left with low hp bars and Sheriff started cleaning house, placing them under house arrest (I’m gonna get fired for these). He took everyone down and the caster went berserk.

Listen to his voice and how much emotion it shows. And then the inevitable happens:

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME, WHO IS GONNA END THE GAME, RUIN GOES DOWN WHAT IS THIS OH MY GOOOOOD H2K THAT IS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL“. That is Shakespearean level emotion-showing.

And who doesn’t love casters being free to speak the way they want (they kinda can’t but every so often it happens). It makes the entire experience more natural, more human. We’ve all swore and said insults into the air at least once in our lives so we can connect with the occasional F-Bomb. Speaking of F-Bombs:

2. Mark Cuban Fucks it, then Fucks it Another Time

Mark Cuban is a madlad, fucking it every step of the way. The grandmaster of fucking it. But what made him the sweetheart of Esports (not an official title) was what he did in 2015 at IEM San Jose. Yes, he actually said “Fuck” while trashtalking and he was fined $15,000! That’s a pretty hefty fine for doing something R-Rated but hey – it actually went to a good cause. In fact, the $15,000 he was supposed to pay for being so, so mean went to charity – more precisely, to CyberSmile; a non-profit organization that provides help against cyberbullying.

So the interviewer on stage asked him if he regrets saying it and paying the fine and the absolute unit actually did it twice!

And he did it to raise another $15,000 through his own pocket for charity. Fuck it!

No, but seriously, what a nice thing to do. Sure 15k might not be much for him given his billionaire status, but it’s a lot for a non-profit. He single-handedly gave them $30,000 just by saying FUCK twice, and the publicity caused by this cheeky guy essentially meant even more resources for CyberSmile. An awesome deed coming from a mouth that might need some soap afterwards (nah just kidding, love you Mark, have my babies, no homo).

1. Dota 2 BITCH

Now, there are some pretty gruesome and creative insults in games that we’ve grown to love (I’ll rip your head off and shit down your neeeeeck – American Superhero – Duke Nukem) but that’s not what we’re talking about here. No no. It’s Dota 2. Topping the charts again.

Yeah some of the units in game have lines that contain swear words (oh my days). Some are great, others are pretty basic, but you can’t really beat an Esports game that’s programmed to have swearing.

  • Holy SHIT it’s VIPER.
  • Holy shit. It’s… me.
  • Uhm. Shit
  • UHM. SHIT.

What a joyful bunch of characters, wouldn’t you agree? No matter what you might think, swearing in Esports is a major part of it. Without swearing, everything would seem numb, culled, and filleted. Swearing and ripping your lungs out due to victory, shouting “FUCK YEEEEEEEEEES” helps others see just how important that is to you. And it’s also important for you to feel even better and relieved at the prospect of winning.

And when you lose, all you do is just throw an insult at your opponent but not really meaning it. Frustration has an interesting way of showing itself and swearing is one of those. So what have we learned from this swearing in Esports article?

Just fuck it. And be fined $15k for it.
