Smooya at IEM Sydney will be filling in for the team Denial in the second North American qualifier for IEM Sydney.
The 19-yo former BIG player, who parted ways with them very recently due to incompatibilities in play style, will take place of Dimitry “Detrony” Hadjipaschali. Dimitry decided to stay with Bravado. Though he was important for his team, helping them to reach top 30 in world ranking, we’re sure Smooya will be a valuable member of the team.

This news came just hours after the announcement that he will be leaving BIG, being replaced by Johannes “nex” Maget, who didn’t play for a time because of a wrist problem.
He will now become the second AWPer in the South African team, alongside Peter “ptr” Gurney.
Denial will compete in the second qualifier with the following members:
- Aran “Sonic” Groesbeek
- Rhys “Fadey” Armstrong
- Ruan “ELUSIVE” van Wyk
- Johnny “JT” Theodosiou
- Owen “Smooya” Butterfield
Smooya outspoke: “Stepping down from BIGCLANgg wasn’t an easy decision but it was one that was needed for them to achieve the success they deserve. I won’t go into all the details behind everything but for the conditions that we had, I feel like we overperformed which makes me happy for all the fans who cheered for us none stop during all our runs at events! […] my main focus would be wanting to move to America full time so I can really work on my craft and have 0 distractions outside of the game.”
